Human Resources Management (HRM)
Human Resources Management or HRM is the process of pursing the best individuals with the intent to employing them, training them, adequately compensating them, and retaining them. In addition, uses its administrative position to write policies and procedures relating to labor laws and regulations.
Most organizations have separate departments or offices dealing with the human resources management. But remember, based on the definition, just about anybody working on an organization with supervisory duties must employ human resources skills.
Human Resources’ duties
The Human Resources Manager’s duties aids the organization in achieving its goals. This aid comes in the form of staffing the right people, developing the organization’s labor policies, and putting together the compensation and benefits offers. There are other duties but we will concentrate on these three.
Staffing – Personnel Recruitment
Recruiting people requires more than just reading a resume and hiring. This process requires that a plan for personnel recruitment must be developed. A staffing plan requires knowing what characteristics are necessary to fill the positions of the organization. How many individuals with those characteristics must be hired. The selection process should allow to segregate all information available, interview the most compatible and attempt to hire the best suited.
Labor and Organization Policies
Organizations must have written labor policies. These policies must adhere to laws and regulations, be updated as needed and informed to the personnel. Basic policies should address:
- Disciplinary policies
- Time-off such as vacation, sick, and special licenses
- Dress code policies
- Behavior policies such as ethics, moral standards
- Internet, social media and other public expressions policies
Policies do matter, do not overlook them, sometimes policies become the difference between a lawsuit or a correct decision.
Compensation and Benefits Offers
Maybe one of the most well known responsibility for human resources managers must be the compensation and benefit plan. Achieving a successful plan must meet prospective employee expectations, the organization’s capabilities and industry standards. In addition, it must comply with laws and regulations.
Examples of compensation plans such as:
- Health benefits
- Retirement plans
- Vacation time
- Sick leave
- Performance or special bonuses

The Human Resources Management function it is an important part of every organization. Successful organizations manage their human capital needs thru well planned and documented policies and procedures. In addition, proper compensation and benefits helps in the retention and well being of the employees at every level. Thus, ultimately benefiting the organization as a whole.
